Cottage Class

This ’30s-era English cottage is set near one of Victoria’s tidal inlets, with a sweeping backyard and manicured garden fashioned for hosting. Despite its heritage beauty, the renovation had to adapt a disjointed house to the needs of a retired couple ready to settle.

With a mission to open the space for active living and social gatherings, Jenny Martin Design worked with these clients to create a multi-functional kitchen for entertaining, build a connection to the garden and tribute a timeless, transitional style.

The kitchen was the focal point of this redesign, and the team forged a new layout that offers practical flow, utilitarian ease and openness. A metallic and monolithic colour scheme exudes a calming aesthetic, while the Ann Sacks modern hexagon backsplash modernizes the vintage flare of the house. A hidden TV above range, coffee bar and multi-purpose island accommodates gathering, while larger windows and preserved architectural elements, like oak hardwood flooring with walnut inlay and new cove crown ceilings, build continuity throughout the house.

The result is a thoughtfully timeless space that emanates class and supports connection for years to come.
