Family Heritage

This Oak Bay redesign transformed a 1900-era character house into a home for a growing family. Situated near the beach on a quiet street, this property offers luxurious practicality while staying true to period craftsman architecture.

Jenny Martin Design worked with these clients to overcome the house’s structural obstacles, and update the space so five family members could enjoy individual rooms. An addition was constructed on the second floor, and the basement was transformed into a functional level. Practicality and period authenticity were at the helm of this project, which involved expanding the kitchen and creating a seamless connection to a new, beautiful outdoor living space.

Generous storage, state-of-the-art appliances, and a low-height baking area was added for preparing meals as a family. Integrated storage solutions were incorporated throughout, including recycling stations, spice storage and sheet dividers. Natural marble countertops and schoolhouse pendant lights compliment the arched pantry, while patterned tile in the adjacent mudroom breathes new life into historic motifs. The master in the upper level includes wall-to-wall closets, reclaiming space compromised by lower rooflines and providing ample storage in a limited area.

The result is an exquisite heritage renovation, with play, simplicity and function married into the design — creating the perfect backdrop to modern family life.
